Lack of global chips can immediately create some unexpected allies in Japan. As a Reuters report, the Nikkei source claimed Sony and TSMC “remembering” a shared creation of the semiconductor factory in West Japanese Kumamoto Prefecture. TSMC will have a majority control, according to the insider, but the factory will operate on Sony Land near the company’s drawing sensor plant. The Japanese government is reported to be discussing up to half the $ 7 billion investment.
The factory will provide chips for cameras, cars and other needs. Therefore, the components of the Denso giant car should be attracted to the project. If the project moves forward, the factory will rise and run in 2024. Sony and TSMC have refused to comment, even though TSMC previously said it was “active review” for efforts like this.
The joint factory will not be surprising. Some analysts expect chip shortages around the world to last up to 2023, and that assuming demand does not grow faster than expected. This will help Sony, TSMC and the larger Japanese technology industry rise back from deficiencies, not to mention adding greater stability. Can also function as a fence – Japan, Sony and TSMC do not need to worry about the production of Chinese-US tension in Taiwan.
The factory may be ready at the right time. A very connected and semi-autonomous car must be more ordinary in 2024, and it’s no secret that the camera plays an important role even in a budget smartphone. The new factory can be very important to maintain this technology on track.
